AccuWeather Update Getting Poor Reviews 27 March 2013, 1:10 pm
AccuWeather recently updated their iPhone app and I have to say that I do not like it. It had a nice clean design with iPhone style graphics. It functioned. Nobody goes there anymore—it’s too crowded. Perhaps that’s how Yogi Berra might describe Mailbox, the iPhone app for making simple work of your Gmail inbox. After first launching with an at-times massive waiting list, Mailbox is now open to all users with no waiting at all. The app aims to make email management easier, with easy swipes to control your inbox, and a system for snoozing messages until later.
The team behind Mailbox—now owned by Dropbox—initially instituted the reser...

Report: Apple replacing some third-gen Apple ... 16 April 2013, 5:01 pm
The third-generation Apple TV wasn’t a huge update from the generation prior: Its major addition was support for 1080p video. But reports suggest the one other significant add-on included in that third-gen Apple TV is the introduction of Wi-Fi networking issues—at least for a small subset of the set-top boxes sold.
9to5 Mac published what it says is official Apple retail correspondence, indicating that “a very small number of Apple TV (3rd generation) products might experience one of...

Review: Hundreds for iOS is a maddening chall... 16 April 2013, 2:30 pm
It’s hard to classify Hundreds as a game, per say. Developed by Semi Secret Software, this $5 universal app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch feels more like a post-modern art installation, or perhaps a Cold War torture device maliciously released on iOS. Regardless, Hundreds is one of the singular weirdest experiences you’ll find on the iOS platform—and its beauty is certainly in the eye of the individual player.
The name Hundreds draws from the number of levels of the game (100) a...

Review: Gumdrop Drop Tech case for iPhone 5 i... 16 April 2013, 2:00 pm
Gumdrop's $45 Drop Tech case for the iPhone 5 looks and feels formidable for a reason: The case is definitely geared towards those who drop their iPhone often or who engage in rugged activities. As robust as the case may look, it isn't waterproof, so don't go running through the rain with it. But in all other aspects, the Drop Tech lives up to its reputation.
The Drop Tech case consists of three parts, starting with a hard plastic frame that goes around the perimeter of your iPhone, which ...

How to take meeting notes that really work 16 April 2013, 11:30 am
As a doctor, educator, and administrator, I attend a lot of meetings. That means taking lots of meeting notes and, after those meetings are over, making sure that all of the action items we’ve decided on get done. Over the years, I’ve tried many different ways to do so.
For ages, I regularly hauled my MacBook Pro along with me, and relied on a variety of apps to capture notes and to-dos. Next, I transitioned to taking handwritten notes with the Livescribe Echo smartpen; that pen transl...

Logitech’s $80 Wireless Solar Keyboard K760 for Mac, iPad, iPhone is one of my favorite Mac keyboards of the past few years, thanks to—as I put it in my review—an appealing design, good keys and key layout, a nice batch of special-function keys, a reasonable price, and multi-device Bluetooth support. The company has followed up with the $100 Bluetooth Easy-Switch Keyboard K811, a keyboard that’s similar to the K760 in many ways, yet different enough to make it even more tempting to s...

Dealing with data caps 15 April 2013, 2:00 pm
Reader Robert Cullers, like many people, faces the bitter realities of streaming media. He writes:
You keep telling us how to use the Internet for entertainment, which results in more and more usage. I suddenly find that my provider has imposed a monthly data limit of 250GB. Three weeks into the month and I’m about 20 percent over this limit. Much of our use is streaming movies from Netflix although there are a number of other downloads like that of the entire Adobe suite. How can we mor...

In Simogo’s $4 Year Walk for iOS, you will plunge right into the middle of a harsh, snow-covered winter, searching for your future through what the Swedes call Årsgång, a mystical experience that can only be achieved by wandering—alone, at night, and on an e...

Is there anything wrong with a chain of coffee shops trying to drum up a little extra business while they're ensuring drowsy drivers don't end up swerving off the road? Thailand-base Cafe Amazon certainly hopes not. Working with BBDO Proximity, the chain created an iPhone app that monitors drivers for signs of sleepiness, and when it catches them nodding off, it directs them to the closest Cafe Amazon store for a hit of caffeine.
The app works by constantly monitoring a driver's eyes and head m...

On Using Your iPhone Abroad Without Getting T... 22 May 2013, 3:23 pm
When I stepped off the plane in Mexico I got that sinking feeling. My iPhone wasn't going to work.
I mean it was, but, you know, it's expensive to use a cell phone abroad. It's even more expensive to use a smartphone abroad. A few years ago, I took a work trip to Paris and did a dumb thing. Long story short, I get off the plane, forget that both my voice and data plans are standard and end up with a four-figure phone bill. AT&T was actually really great about getting the number down to aro...

Daily iPhone App: Combo Crew does beat-em-up ... 25 May 2013, 12:30 am
Combo Crew is an interesting experiment that just showed up this week on iOS. Beat-em-ups and fighting games are great on consoles, where you've got plenty of buttons and d-pads to pull off various moves with. But while they've appeared on iOS a few times (Capcom's Street Fighter IV has done fairly well on the App Store), usually these games on a touchscreen tend to just fall back on virtual buttons, which are generally way more clunky and less precise than physical moving parts.
Combo Crew...

Now, Ninja Theory is releasing its first iOS title, Fightback, which EA studio Chillingo will publish. iPhone repair costs are soaring 24 May 2013, 3:00 pm
Marketwatch recently took a look at the rising price of iPhone 5 screen repairs, pointing out that the US$229 Apple sometimes charges to repair a broken iPhone 5 screen is often more than the cost of the device itself, with a two-year contract of course.
At the root of rising iPhone repair costs are more expensive components coupled with a lower supply of said components.
The replacement components for the iPhone 5 are much more expensive than similar parts for prior models -- so expensive ...
